During my 15 years at Cathedral, the athletic program has become a thriving, essential component of our school community. The support of our parents, teachers, administrators, and Board of Trustees has inspired our student-athletes and brought home multiple championships.
According to the mission of The Cathedral School, we as educators are committed “to a rigorous academic program that integrates the arts, athletics, and leadership development.” We live that mission, with more than 90% of Upper School students participating in at least one interscholastic sport per school year. The majority of our students play on two or three teams. Athletics are truly a cornerstone of The Cathedral School experience.
Cathedral’s athletic program focuses on the early development of sport-specific skills, allowing students to be successful at both the middle and high school levels. We foster team dynamics and encourage leadership, self-confidence, and a lifelong appreciation of athletic participation. We also support the centrality of character education in the life of The Cathedral School. Discipline, cooperation, integrity, leadership, respect, and sportsmanship are all integral parts of our school philosophy. Additional key components in our program are mental focus, positive thinking, teamwork, and game strategy.
Beginning in 5th grade, students have the opportunity to compete interscholastically. Our team sports include cross country, volleyball, soccer, basketball, track and field, baseball, and softball. We also offer clubs for tennis and lacrosse in addition to Ping-Pong and Ultimate Frisbee electives. We encourage proper development of a competitive spirit, but our no-cut policy ensures that every student experiences the joy of team participation.
Importantly, our coaches are all teachers at Cathedral and experienced athletes in their own right. They work hard to develop athletic skills and the core character traits of our student-athletes. Coaches and players always do their best to represent Cathedral in a positive and sportsmanlike manner on the athletic field or court, as in all aspects of school life.
