Philosophy of Technology Education

Technology is an important component of our students’ academic, social, and everyday life. The Cathedral School recognizes that technology literacy and a thorough understanding of the digital world is a fundamental part of becoming a responsible citizen of the world.

The Cathedral School believes that a holistic approach to technology education is a collaborative effort between parents and teachers. The school’s role in this partnership is to promote responsible and proficient use of technology by educating students along five core competencies:

Digital Literacy: Skillful, knowledgeable, and creative use of technology
Digital Citizenship: Responsible, conscientious internet use
Digital Wellness: Safe, healthy relationships with digital media
Digital Integrity: Kind, thoughtful digital communication
Digital Awareness: Understanding the complex nature of digital information, which includes the trustworthiness of sources, digital footprints, and the influence of consumerism in shaping online experiences

We commit to this approach because we believe strongly that there are significant benefits from developmentally appropriate opportunities to explore technology. Explicit instruction along the five competencies listed above and support for those values at home can give children at The Cathedral School the tools and knowledge to use technology in a healthy, productive, and creative way.
