Parents, educators, DEI practitioners, dancers, and community members are invited to attend a screening of Out From the Wings, a documentary film by Michael Montoya exploring gender roles in dance and their effects on LGBTQIA+ dancers, followed by a talkback with the director.

Michael Montoya is a professional dancer, choreographer, educator, and filmmaker currently residing and teaching jazz dance history and technique in the Hudson Valley, New York area. In his film Out From the Wings, Montoya not only shares his analysis of traditional gender role expectations in the world of dance but also, through video interviews, shares the stories of lesbian, gay, non-binary, and transgender dancers as they candidly discuss how these rigid expectations of gender and sexual identity have negatively affected them—both personally and professionally.
 
Out From the Wings is an official selection of the 2022 Reel Affirmations LGBTQ film festival in Washington, D.C.
